Discover the Best Dessert Classes Online

Most people enjoy a good dessert, whether a piece of cake, slice of pie, or a warm cookie.

The art of dessert making dates back to ancient times, although the sweets have gotten notably sweeter in modern times.

The professionals who make desserts are called pastry chefs or pâtissiers. They complete formal training and spend a great deal of time perfecting their craft. There are also hobbyists and enthusiasts who don’t make desserts for a living but simply enjoy the process, and of course the treats that come from it.

Desserts are classified as sweets eaten at the end of meals, with variations in each area of the world. Common desserts in the United States include ice cream, pie, cake, cookies, pastries, and pudding, although those are far from the only possibilities. For instance, residents in Latin American countries often enjoy flan.

Why You Should Learn Dessert Making Online

Dessert making is a great way to use your hands and creativity in a way that feels (and tastes) good. It can relieve the stress of a busy day and make you feel accomplished at something you enjoy doing.

If you like serving others, dessert making is a helpful skill to learn. You could make your friends and family their favorite treats as a way to show them you’re thinking about them. It’s a thoughtful way to acknowledge how much they mean to you.

Learning how to make desserts could be a great way to connect to a new community of like-minded people or even entrepreneurs. Because dessert making is such a big and broad industry, it’s a skill you could potentially turn into a small business or “side hustle” to bring in a little extra cash doing something you love that makes people happy.

Virtual Dessert Classes

Learning to make desserts virtually is completely doable. There are many ways to learn and a wide variety of online courses to choose from. This is a nice option that makes learning possible for more people, although you may have to provide your own ingredients and materials.

If you’re curious about what online dessert classes are available, try looking on CourseHorse. There’s a whole category of cooking, and you can narrow your search down to desserts, or baking if that piques your interest.

Candy Making: Truffles & Brittle is a fun course where you’ll learn how to craft dark chocolate truffles and brittle with your favorite mix-ins. When you register for the class, you’ll receive many of the ingredients in the mail including Peanuts, dark chocolate, hazelnuts, cocoa powder, and a gift card top purchase heavy cream for the truffle-making and/or mix-ins for your brittle. You will need to provide some items you probably already have in your kitchen like sugar, bowls, and a spatula.

Food Craft offers a Cookie Decorating course where you can learn decorating techniques to make your cookies the prettiest around. You’ll also make cinnamon sugar palmiers and chocolate glaze during class. Yum. You’ll receive a supply kit with the cookies, icing, and other items you’ll need during class. All you have to supply are scissors and paper towels.

Private Online Group Dessert Classes

Dessert making classes can be a great way to bond over something lighthearted. Do you want to schedule a dessert making class as a fun team-building event for your business or organization? Maybe you’re in charge of a larger than usual team or you have new team members. There are many private group dessert classes to choose from on CourseHorse.

Satisfy the craving for anyone’s sweet tooth with Candy Making: Truffles & Brittle. During your private session, you’ll make brittle with your favorite mix-ins and dark chocolate truffles. Up to 250 people can join, so there’s plenty of room for everyone in your group. At the end, you’ll be able to share your treats and admire everyone’s hard work.

CourseHorse provides some of the main ingredients for the class, shipping directly to each participant’s address. You’ll still need to provide some basic ingredients like sugar and mixing equipment, though.

If your event is in the summer, the Virtual Ice Cream Making Workshop might be an ideal way to spend time as a group. You’ll learn step by step how to make traditional sweet cream ice cream. The chef will also show you how to make ginger ice cream featured in the New York Times. After class, you’ll understand basic techniques so you can make your own ice cream at home.

The ice cream workshop can accommodate up to 100 people, and each participant receives their own ice cream making kit including the ginger flavoring, bags, and cookies. You’ll just need to have your own milk or cream, sugar, and ice on hand before class starts.

CourseHorse is a nice company to work with when providing events for your team. For private events, you can customize your class with themes, games, or additional support for a $150 fee. You can also book without knowing the final headcount. There’s a minimum of ten participants required, but you can update the list after you schedule your event.

You’ll receive a confirmation within 24 hours of booking, and there aren’t any booking fees. CourseHorse does recommend the Zoom video platform, but they are able to support Google Meets, Microsoft Teams, and WebEx as well.

Have questions or want to schedule a demo to see how the events work? Visit the CourseHorse site and reach out via their contact form.

Online vs. In-Person Dessert Classes

As with most topics, there are advantages and disadvantages to learning online. Though in-person classes offer a sense of community within your actual community, dessert making classes aren’t offered in a lot of places. Live online classes can still give you a sense of community, and you can connect with a diverse group of people from many places.

As you’re looking for classes to take, consider how you learn best. You might be able to relax and have more fun in your home or another familiar space than you would in a group somewhere less familiar. You’ll also want to consider any distractions you might face and how you’ll manage those, for instance noisy neighbors or pets.

You should also think about how experienced you would like your instructor to be. When you’re taking classes in-person or online, there should be a brief description of their experience and why they’re leading the class. Do they have a specific level of formal education you expect? Have they traveled and honed their skills for a certain amount of time? Choose the instructor you feel comfortable learning from.

Can I Learn Dessert Making for Free Online?

With the growth of the internet, you can learn almost anything for free. Whether or not that’s the best option is the question. There are plenty of YouTube videos and free tutorials online you could start with to make sure you enjoy dessert making before you commit to a paid class. Ultimately, you’ll gain a better and quicker understanding when you take a course with a skilled expert.
