Video Editors manipulate and rearrange video clips, audio, and effects in order to create video content that tells a story or conveys some other message to the audience. While most people associate video editing with the film and television industry, Video Editors also work in a wide range of other industries. For example, they create educational content for schools, design social media content, and craft marketing material.

Video content is a popular tool for businesses of many types, making video editing skills a valuable asset. Researchers have found that video is a very effective way to get people’s attention, and to help them understand and remember information. For instance, according to a recent LinkedIn post, when video is used on social media, it gets 1200 percent more shares than text and image content combined, and when viewers receive information in a video, they retain 95 percent of it, compared to only 10 percent if they read it in text.

NYC Industries That Use Video Editing

Video Editors work in many different industries. One of the largest is the film and television industry, and a significant percentage of the country’s film and television companies are based in New York City, which has a large arts and entertainment community. According to one recent study, New York City’s film and television industry supports hundreds of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in wages every year. Video Editors who are employed in this industry can work on a wide range of different types of projects including movies, short films, documentaries, and television shows.

Video Editing Jobs & Salaries in NYC

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides employment statistics and projections for Video Editors in the United States. It ranks the New York metropolitan area at number two–after Los Angeles–for the highest employment level of Film and Video Editors. Overall, it estimates that about four-and-a-half thousand people are employed in this profession in the New York City area. This is almost half as many as Los Angeles, however, it is far more than the number three ranking, which is the Chicago area, with just under 300 people employed.

BLS also provides salary estimates for Film and Video Editors. In New York City, they earn close to $110,000 per year. This is far higher than the national average of $60,000. In fact, New York City is the top-paying metropolitan area in the United States for Film and Television Editors. It is followed by San Francisco, with an average annual wage of $90,000.

Overall, BLS projects that between 2021 and 2031, employment of Film and Video Editors in the United States will increase by 12 percent, which is much faster than the average rate of 5 percent. It explains that this increase is predicted in part because there is expected to be an increase in online media platforms such as streaming services, which will lead to demand for more video content.
