Marion Spencer is a Brooklyn based dance artist. Since moving to New York Marion has had the pleasure of performing with Shandoah Goldman/Carte Blanche Performance, Melissa Riker/Kinesis Dance Project, Hollis Bartlett, Megan Bascom, Michiyaya Dance, Lauren Petty and Shaun Irons, and apprenticing and performing with David Dorfman Dance.

She is thrilled be a part of the Dancewave family. Marion currently teaches Beginning Adult Modern, Open Level Adult Modern, and directs the Adult Modern Company. She graduated from Vassar College in 2009 with a BA in Geography-Anthropology.

Open Level Modern

While the people in the class were enthusiastic and really nice, and the teacher also seemed kind and she had a lot of energy, I did not like the class very much. The warmup was not a modern dance warmup--it was a yoga sequence with a little bit of "dance-y" moves. The warmup was surprisingly brief, and I did not feel warmed up at the end. A dance sequence, part of a dance the company was working on, directly followed the warmup. As a former modern dancer and award-winning choreographer, I found the choreography disappointing in that it was unoriginal, uninspired, and lacking in cohesiveness. I also did not like that the teacher offered no instruction or correction of technique at any time during the class, such as proper alignment. This absence, especially for beginners in the class, could easily lead to injury. There was no "teaching" at all. The class was basically an open company rehearsal, in which non-company members struggled to catch up and follow the along. While everyone was friendly, I did not enjoy the class at all and I will not go back to this dance school. I give two stars because of the enthusiasm and friendliness, but in terms of a dance class, I would give just one star or less, if I could. There was no teaching and the class was not really a modern dance class.
