What you'll learn in this kids programming class:

If you like platformers like Mario and Celeste, classic arcade games like Block Breaker and Snake, or modern games like Subway Surfer and Flappy Bird, this is the class for you. We’ll learn the basics of programming in JavaScript using a library called p5.js which will allow us to get our games live and hosted on the web with very little lift. We’ll also cover the development principles that go into creating satisfying and fun-to-play games, so you’ll have the foundation you need to design more games of your own after the course ends.

Art, Code, & Game Design is designed for beginners and intermediate students who want to think about how to use code to recreate the apps and digital experiences they love, and then build on that foundation to create games and interactive art pieces that are uniquely their own. Students will also be exposed to not only the foundational coding concepts necessary to build their games, but also the game design principles and user testing necessary to make sure their games are super fun to play.

p5.js Primitives

p5.js is a JavaScript library that allows you to control a canvas with code. Students will learn the most common p5 functions and conventions.

Functions

The built-in functions that come with p5.js are powerful, and can be augmented with custom functions. Students will learn to use the built-in functions, and how to create their own.

Data Structures

Arrays and Objects are the two most common ways to store pieces of related information in JavaScript. Students will learn to utilize these data structures to account for related information.

Object Orientation

Object-oriented programming allows students to create more dynamic and responsive code using custom classes to manage data and automate tasks. Students will practice definint their own classes and creating instances of those classes.

Game Design

There are lots of unimpressive games out there, so what makes the best ones great? Students will have the opportunity to learn game design best practices for game feel, level design, and difficulty curves.

Collaboration

Full-time engineers work on teams, and employers look for great collaborators. Our courses offer you the chance to experience the power of collaborating on a major project firsthand.

FAQs

Who teaches Upperline Code's classes?

All of our courses are taught by experienced instructors and developers who have received over one hundred hours of training and preparation in CS content and pedagogy.

What technology do I need to take the class?

We aim to make our classes as accessible as possible from a technical perspective, so we only have a few requirements: Students are asked to have a high-speed internet connection, and a Chromebook, Mac, or PC with a working video camera and microphone. We highly suggest students use headphones and find quiet place within their home to take the class.

What level of coding should students have?

We have students come in with no coding experience at all, and students who have taken AP computer science. Our curriculum labeled "Beginner - Intermediate" is designed to meet all students at all levels. Courses labeled "Intermediate" or "Advanced" do assume a basic level of familiarity with the language, and we encourage families to reach out with questions about the appropriate level for their students.

Do you offer payment plans and financial aid?

We do. Families can choose to pay the full tuition up front, or to pay in installments as the date of the camp approaches. We also offer a limited number of half and full scholarship seats.

What is the structure of the class?

We aim to have at least one Upperline instructor and one teaching assistant for every class of 20 students. Classes include a mix of direct instruction, individual student work on coding assignments, and group work in small ‘breakout meeting rooms’, where students build projects together.

How many hours per day does the class meet?

In the summer, each of our virtual classes will meet for 2.5 hours in the morning, and 1.5 hours in the afternoon. Students will receive an hour offline for lunch, and another hour at the end of the day for self-guided study time, called "Choose Your Own Adventure."

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.
