3D Jewelry Design

This introduction workshop teaches students to use an easy-to-learn 3D modeling software to design a custom skull ring.

In this Intro to 3D Modeling workshop, students will use Tinkercad, a free, browser-based 3D modeling software to create a custom ring of their own design which will be produced in metal through the use of 3D printing.

In the first class, students will be taught this easy-to-learn, intuitive 3D modeling software and will learn various modeling tricks suited for jewelry design, then students will have the opportunity to create the design for their own ring. 

In the second class, students will utilize their new-found modeling skills to 3D model their ring design with the guidance and hands-on demos from the instructor. They will also be shown how to use Shapeways.com, an online 3D printing service as a tool to continue fabricate their own designs in the future. The ring that each student designs will be made in brass or bronze (option for sterling silver with an additional fee) through the use of 3D printing. 

The class will meet on a third day to pick up the finished rings and get a brief 3D printing tour of the Shapeways headquarters in Long Island City.

Note: 
Students are asked to bring their personal laptop and an external, 2-button mouse, (ideally with a scroll wheel.)
No previous 3D modeling experience is needed! Beginners are welcome!
