Description

Scott's Pizza Tours is serious ab out pizza education. They’ve been teaching pizza lovers about the history, science, culture, and flavor of New York pizza since 2008 through walking tours, bus tours, virtual classes, and live lectures. It’s no surprise the company has been featured on The Tonight Show, Live with Kelly and Ryan, The New York Times, Oprah Magazine, and just about every other major media outlet!

Every tour visits a series of pizzerias your guide uses to unravel crucial information about pizza. Way more than just a restaurant tasting, a tour with us literally takes you behind the scenes at some of the city’s hottest pizzerias. You’ll get a slice at every stop and exclusive behind-the-scenes looks at all the different ovens, cheese types, tomato preparations, and dough techniques. Keep track of your findings in your very own Pocket Pizza Journal, a handy notebook we designed specifically for pizza analysis.

If it sounds like we’re a little obsessed, it’s because we are. Our founder Scott Wiener started the tour in 2008 after years of personal pizza exploration. He now judges international pizza competitions, writes a monthly column for Pizza Today Magazine, consults for ingredient companies and pizzerias, and serves as a talking head on just about every pizza show. He’s even in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the world’s largest collection of pizza boxes!

Our tours are conducted by an elite team of pizza lovers who found each other through our collective love of the slice. We’re like a team of pizza nerd superheroes!

Not only was the pizza great, but I learned much more about the evolution of New York-style pizza than I'd expected to. The choice of three restaurants took the New York pizza story from its Neapolitan roots, through old-school New York style, to the familiar modern pizza-by-the-slice storefront style, with a wealth of information about the types of ovens and ingredients used for the different styles. We also took a brief side trip past Café Wha? where Bob Dylan got his professional start, and the Comedy Cellar, perhaps the world's premier stand-up club.

We really enjoyed the Downtown Brooklyn Pizza Walk. As New Yorkers we were interested to see what pizza would be showcased and while the places we visited were serving delicious pizza, we were slightly disappointed that we did not get what we consider a real NY slice (triangle slice of pizza, sauce, and mozzarella that you have to pat with a napkin to soak up some of the grease). However, we visited 3 excellent places - one coal-fired, one wood-fired, and one serving Sicilian pizza and met new people from California and Washington. All of the pizzas were delicious and the discussions about the dough, sauce, and mozzarella were interesting. Definitely recommend if you are a pizza lover and would enjoy an afternoon strolling downtown Brooklyn and eating some tasty pizzas.

Dave was a phenomenal host. First and foremost, friendly and enthused. Super knowledgeable about pizza history, cooking techniques, ingredients, and differentiating the experience among 3 diff types of pizza - from Neapolitan to coal oven to more modern grandma/Sicilian. Highly recommend for the pizza enthusiastic!

I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to make fantastic pizza dough from scratch from Scott. Scott’s class was fun and very informative, we even touched on a bit of chemistry about properties of yeast and flour! Scott is super organized and is able to give us plenty of individual attention if needed. I highly recommend Scott’s class to anyone looking to obtain that perfect pizza dough. My only regret was that I couldn’t take his next class on preparing and stretching the dough, I’m sure it was equally impressive. However I look forward to taking that class and other classes from Scott in the future.

This class was awesome. Scott is fantastic. He has so much knowledge about pizza and pizza making. The class included people a range of skills sets, including some people who make pizza frequently and had a lot of advanced equipment and other people, like me, who are total novices. Scott managed to tailor the class for everybody and answer everybody’s questions. He has a good scientific and technical understanding of dough making and a really deep understanding of different types of doughs, flours, and pizzas. I learned a lot and found it really interesting and fun as well. I would definitely recommend this class.
