What you'll learn in this clay class:

Join us in-person to sculpt a full-length figure or portrait head from observation of the live model. Assisted by demonstrations  by the instructor and a variety of handouts from classic texts,  we will start with a simplified blockout of basic proportions, mass relationships, and gesture. This provides the basis for a more nuanced, individualized, naturalistic or imagined sculpture. Students will be offered oil- or water-based clay with an armature, with the option of firing their armature-free sculptures into a finished ceramic at  semester’s end. Modeling tools will be shown and described during the first class. If you think you might want to use water-based clay, please bring a light-weight cotton pillowcase or similar cotton cloth to keep the clay moist.

*This class will take place IN-PERSON at the New York Academy of Art. Please see the Academy’s Covid-19 Info Page for information on our safety protocols. In-person CE students are required to follow all such safety measures, including social distancing and wearing masks. Class sizes are limited to maintain social distance and promote safety.

Students who are fully vaccinated will be required to show proof of vaccination upon entry. Students who are not vaccinated will need to follow alternative prevention procedures. Please see the Academy’s full Covid-19 Vaccination Policy for full details.

Refund Policy
100% refund will be issued up to seven days after the first class. After this, no refund will be issued.

Unfortunately, we do not offer makeup classes. The instructor can tell them what they missed. Most of our classes are taught atelier style. If there is a demonstration during the particular session, after the demonstration the instructor goes to each student to work with them on a one-to-one basis. During this time the instructor can work with the student who missed the previous week, talk with them and explain what to do.

This was a great class! Great to have two teachers, so that everyone could get guidance. Definitely recommend and will be taking it again! Do wish it was a little smaller in terms of the number of students. But otherwise, I learned so much from Jesse and Cynthia, they were amazing. They each have there own way of doing things, which at first can be a bit confusing. But in the long run, I think it's really beneficial because you get two different methods & two different design eyes to guide you. I learned so much in this class and was shocked at how much progress I made in the end!

THIS IS A GREAT CLASS! Cynthia is an amazing teacher. The structure of the class is pretty loose, which is perfect for people who like to learn from doing, rather than from endless demonstrations and lectures. Perfect for beginners! I had never touched clay before taking this class and Cynthia and the other students made me feel incredibly comfortable and I ended up with a piece I am very proud of. If you have any interest in figurative sculpture, but no idea where to start, TAKE THIS CLASS! You won't regret it.
