When photographing the New York Public Library, dedicated on May 23rd, 1911, you can start with the matching marble lions, named Patience and Fortitude. They bookend the staircase leading to the main entrance of the Beaux Arts building and you can practice getting a sense of capturing subject matter from different angles to create new perspectives. The lions can be photographed close up in and of themselves, or you can work your Aperture Priority options and surround them with the context of the grand steps as well as the magnificent building itself.
And the interior, with sculpted ceilings, oversized windows that date back 100″ years offer a myriad of broad perspectives and rich detail. Make portraits in natural light and work with your DPA instructor to develop shutter speed techniques to accommodate the ambient lighting.
Rows of historic accessories of lights, desks, chairs, set against gleaming floors and the warm glow of wooden interior design are perfectly captured with Leading Lines composition, Rule of Thirds and other classic techniques.
Each Composition in the Field class begins with a talk with one of our experienced instructors, and then you and your fellow students take a stroll through one of a variety of photogenic locales (in any of the 20+ cities the DPA encapsulates). There is street photography, magnificent interiors, farmers markets, zoos, landscapes, and more, photos of which are included within. These photos are a mix of student and instructor images in many different venues and cities across the United States and Canada.
You will have fun in the three-hour session, learn to shoot strategically, get more interesting photos of the event, and walk away with a foundation to improve your photographs in the future, whether you’re traveling, or at a birthday party and everywhere in between.
