Class Description

Description

In this immersive and engaging course, students will explore the rich art of portrait painting through the dynamic and expressive lens of costumed figure work. The instructor will begin with a comprehensive overview of her proven approach to painting the portrait, emphasizing a broad-to-specific method of structuring the head and working methodically from large shapes to smaller, carefully refined details.

Throughout this course, we will explore classic construction techniques, including the renowned Loomis method and the strategic use of angles to enhance accuracy and improve proportion in your portraits. As we work from live models dressed in richly detailed period or thematic costumes, students will deepen their understanding of facial structure, human anatomy, and the compelling storytelling power of costume and pose. Every element contributes to the narrative quality of your work.

Special attention will be given to painting facial features with sensitivity and capturing the subtle interplay of light and shadow across both skin and fabric surfaces. Through detailed demonstrations and personalized individual guidance, students will develop their technical painting skills while discovering innovative ways to convey spirit, atmosphere, and distinct character in their portrait work.

Whether you are looking to elevate your existing portraiture abilities or breathe new life into your figurative work, this course offers a unique and deeply inspiring approach to creating compelling and memorable portraits.

All skill levels are welcome in this inclusive learning environment.
