While the dates we have listed on CourseHorse reflect actual dates a class may be held, each student is required to reach out to the school to discuss lesson specifics and scheduling. This is because the school takes a very hands-on approach with each student in an effort to maximize what they get out of the class. The school contact information will be emailed to you with your receipt.
This hands-on class will teach students the craft of machine sewing. There will be some projects that will also require some hand sewing, but mostly it is on the machine.
We want sewing to be an enjoyable, and creatively satisfying experience, that will develop their skill level in a manageable way. We want to keep frustration at bay.
The classes are completely hands. Kids will start using the sewing machine right away. After a brief lesson on safety, they will practice on paper first, and then they will make a simple sewing bag. They will learn to measure, pin, thread on the machine, and then start to sew on the fabric for the bag. If they make mistakes, they learn how to use a seam ripper to correct the mistakes, and re-do.
After the bags (they make a separate smaller bag to keep the thread in) are completed, we are able to assess what beginning projects would be the best next step for them, and they get to choose from a few options. We work in a non-competitive environment so that each student works at their own pace. Eventually, they will be working from our patterns, so they will do some pinning of patterns, cutting, and reading instructions on how to put the project together.
