What you'll learn in this crafts class:

This vibrant workshop includes techniques for working with hot wax. We combine multiple media techniques on a variety of surfaces, emphasizing unity of design, texture and color. We begin with watercolor, ink, any dry media and collage, and then build with encaustic, maybe adding in oil and pigment sticks. Other media combinations might include, charcoal or graphite. It is the layering processes that are critical. 

All imagery applicable. Appropriate for continuing painters who are excited about working with wax. Instructor supplies the wax medium, wax paint, heating tools (griddles, heat guns, torches) practice surfaces and several panels per student.

Materials fee: $75. Some other materials needed - see supply list. 

Required supplies for this program:

Materials fee of $75 to instructor day of, which covers:
  • 1 cradled, primed Birch Panel 8’x8” for each student
  • 2 8”x*8” practice panels
  • 8 ply museum mat board, small pieces for mounting
  • Paint Brushes
  • Encaustic Medium (wax with damar resin)
  • Encaustic Paint (the rainbow spectrum plus white)
  • Heat Guns, torches, heating surfaces (electric griddles, fry pans)
  • Graphite Powder, Charcoal powder
  • Some scraping tools
  • Some Collage tools
  • Some Oil Pastels, soft pastels & Drawing Media, watercolor in spray bottles
  • Tubs for pouring Wax
MATERIALS YOU BRING:
  • 300lb watercolor paper
  • 4 or 8 ply museum board, 1 full sheet cut up in 8” squares for exercises
  • Your collection of watercolor, drawing, oil and collage materials including: Watercolor crayons, charcoal, oil pastels, water-based graphite pencils, colored pencils, oil paint sticks, graphite pencils. Wax loves Oil. No acrylic paint
  • 3 Additonal Surfaces to work on: Must be Absorbent and Inflexible:
  • 2 Wood *or prepared Encaustic panels—8”x8” up to 14” /300lb watercolor paper
ADDITIONAL NEEDS:
  • 3 Bristle utility brushes, variety of sizes (½”, 1”, 2”)
  • Nitrile Gloves for protecting hands
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Collage materials: Papers, Threads, Xerox images, photos
  • Masking Tape for stenciling—1/2 “ , 1”
  • Rags/ Wear crummy clothes, bring an oven mitt
The following mediums are entirely optional but extremely useful:
  • Oil Paint Sticks ( Sennelier or R&F are best)
  • Oil Pastels
  • Watercolor crayons (Caran D’Ache Neo color II, Woody Stabilo)

Refund Policy
When class/workshop enrollment is below the minimum five days prior to the first day of class, the class may be cancelled. If there is a cancellation, we will contact registered students at least 4 days before the start of the class/workshop by email or by phone.

We will offer students the option to transfer into another class or receive a full refund for the amount paid.

Classes are not refunded due to failure to attend class, planned absences, minor illnesses, or vacations.

If you drop a class:
  • You will receive a 100% refund minus a $15 administrative fee if you drop a class at least 7 days before it starts. 
  • You will receive a 50% refund minus a $15 administrative fee if you drop a class after this point but before the second day of class. 
  • There are no refunds after the second class.
If you drop a workshop:
  • You will receive a 100% refund minus a $15 administrative fee if you drop a class at least 7 days before it starts. No refunds or credit will be given after this point.
