Leatherworking, or leather crafting, is defined as the act of turning leather into practical items or unique pieces of art using techniques like molding, dyeing, carving, stamping, and fabrication. An essential part of human history since 50,000 BCE, leather has long been an everyday necessity. From wallets to shoes, belts to purses, and even functional items like saddles and protective gear, the crafting of leather goods is perhaps one of humanity’s longest and most time-honored traditions.

Did you know that leather was even used for crafting shields and jewelry during the Bronze and Iron Ages? From the Greeks to the Romans, throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance, leather crafting was always in high demand. Further developments in the Industrial Age and new tanning methods helped streamline the practice into what it is today.

Both handmade and machine-made leather goods can now be found across the globe and serve as valuable, practical, and stylish pieces fit for any occasion.

Why You Should Learn Leather in Houston

It probably comes as no surprise that Texas has long been known for its leather industries. For many years, Texas was the nation’s largest producer of hides, with more than 84 leather and leather-product plants by 1963. It’s this rich history that has made Houston a hub for leather goods boutiques.

There are endless reasons to study leatherworking, and stress management may be at the top of that list. A hobby such as leather crafting can be an outlet for those looking to relieve some of that tension and improve their mental health. Cutting, gluing, stitching, casing, and embossing are all tasks that require your sole focus, allowing you to set aside previous stressors while you fine-tune your craft.

The practice of leatherworking can help you to form new connections and make new friends. Leatherworkers are a niche community of passionate craftspeople where you can easily plug into groups like the International Leather Club. You can also join forums or check out local meetups of like-minded people near you.

Looking to leave your nine-to-five for something more creative? An expert in the field could work for a large retailer or designer, or run their own small business selling bespoke leather items. Those that set out on their own could sell at markets, pop-up events, and festivals locally or nationwide.

In-Person Leather Classes in Houston

TXRX Labs is a non-profit in Second Ward that offers classes, lab space, and collective knowledge to help you launch your ideas and projects. Leatherworking I is an all-level course that introduces the fundamentals of the craft. Students will get familiar with materials, tools, techniques, and finishing, and will leave class with a handmade leather bracelet.

Students can then move on to Leatherworking II: Belt, TXRX Labs’ intermediate course. Students will learn elevated skills like punching, end cutting, skeeving, attaching buckles, and using a pattern roller to make a custom handmade leather belt.

A more unique offering, Costuming: Leather Masks teaches how to create and use a template, cut out a pattern, use various tools, and form or mold leather. Once your mask is complete, you can choose to dye, paint, or airbrush your handmade mask.

Located in Katy, Multiplicity has several classes that work with leather. Stitching on Leather Necklace combines leatherwork with jewelry making. You’ll learn to properly use beading tools, basic beading techniques, and how to sew beads onto leather.

You can make your own leather Celtic bracelet by weaving leather and properly using jewelry tools. Students will form their own Celtic knots and learn to wire wrap, thread beads onto leather, and attach jewelry closures. Similarly, Stitch Me Up Bracelet covers all the same skills so you can make a chunky, bespoke leather bracelet. All classes at Multiplicity are led by expert instructors who aim to inspire and instill confidence in artisans of all levels.

Virtual Leather Classes

While in-person classes allow for face-to-face interaction with an expert instructor and learning in a hands-on environment with other students, online classes can typically accommodate more difficult schedules. Plus, online classes can be attended from wherever you choose. While they typically don’t supply materials and equipment, the flexibility of online classes is very appealing. Regardless of if you choose live or pre-recorded, virtual leather crafting classes are ideal for those who need to squeeze in their new hobby around their busy schedules.

Atelier by Héna offers three courses that focus on leather crafting. Firstly, they offer an online cardholder-making class that will introduce new artisans to basic leather making tools. You’ll learn the best beginner techniques like saddle stitching, sanding, and edge painting. Each student will complete their very own handmade leather cardholder by the end of class. Tools are not included, but a list of what you’ll need is provided to you before attending.

Their second course is an online handbag-making course where students will design and create their own handmade leather goods. Foundational skills like pattern making, cutting, bonding, edge painting, and saddle stitching are all taught by an accomplished instructor. As with the previous course, students are responsible for bringing their own tools.

And, for those interested in combining their passion for leatherwork with the craft of jewelry making, Atelier by Héna also has an online bracelet-making class. This course teaches the same basic techniques but with a focus on designing bespoke pieces of jewelry. Students will attend “live” with an expert instructor, allowing for real-time troubleshooting.

Want to ease your way into the craft? Coastal Design Workshops LLC will teach you to make a leather koozie in just one hour. Designed as an introductory lesson in leather crafting, this online class teaches you to stencil, cut, punch, and stitch genuine leather with special leatherworking tools. A kit will be shipped to you before class containing everything you’ll need to create your koozie.
