Kara Walker’s work recasts imagery from the antebellum South, depicting the brutality of slavery and confronting racist stereotypes. Deborah Willis, professor and chair of the Department of Photography and Imaging at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, discusses Walker’s striking works, expands on the themes of the exhibition, and addresses the need for an open dialogue and for promoting safe spaces.
