Peter Flores

Teaches at Baruch College - CAPS

Peter Flores, a continuing studies faculty member and karate master, is strengthening the Bearcat community through a series of martial arts classes he has been conducting in the Vertical Campus’ weight room for about a year and a half now.

Any Baruch College student who regularly works out in the weight room would recognize Flores as he performs a vast array of karate techniques in the gym’s stretching area.

Sensei Flores has been studying Goju-ryu, a karate style based in the Okinawa prefecture of Japan, for 16 years now. However, Flores is quick to point out that although the discipline is derived from Okinawa’s Nahate style, it is originally from China.
Flores was born into a family of practitioners of the art.

“Basically, it was in my blood. My uncle’s a martial artist, my father’s a martial artist,” he said. “I have family that always has had interest in the martial arts. So it became very natural for me.” His expertise in the art is a wonder not just to onlookers but also to Baruch’s other martial artists. T.J. Desch-Obi, an associate professor of African and African Diaspora history, is a Brazilian jujitsu master and an admirer of Flores.
