I gifted myself the Sumi-e class for my birthday week and I wasn't disappointed! The instructor greeted us with subdued music in an open classroom in the East Village and then proceeded to list her qualifications as a Sumi-e instructor, which were impressive. It was a small group which was just perfect and, to my delight, the subject was a beautiful Japanese bird and plumb blossom branch just in time for my spring birthday! I can't draw or paint to save my life but soon I was mimicking the instructor's master strokes and creating a work of art that I am so very proud of! I even framed it at the request of my friends and family who were all so impressed with my "first attempt" at this ancient art form. In short, I recommend this course highly, the instructor highly, and also highly recommend you put aside your inhibitions and just let yourself CREATE! I plan on taking more of these informative and restorative classes.
It was a great class, the teacher was professional and kind. The classroom setting was quite nice as well.
I enjoyed learning this technique. It was harder than I thought. I’d have liked to know in advance which picture was being taught as I’d have preferred an alternate one.
Ryoko was very personable & knowledgeable. I had a wonderful time taking her Ikebana class & love the arrangements I made. I would definitely take her class again. Thank you!
The class was very interesting, we had everything we need, the teacher was very nice, I am not sure if she was very clear, some moments was difficult to understand but I am not an English native speaker. I think 1 hour and 15´ is too short. I would make it last 30 minutes more. The experience was great Thank you
I am a terrible artist; however, I bought this for my husband who loved it and the teacher was wonderful as was the rest of the class. We learned to paint flowers and butterflies - everything I did looked like cockroaches but the teacher still gave me sweet compliments and let me do my own thing when it was clear I was not going to be a success case.
I do not feel this course deserve a rating! I have taken a lot of course through Coursehorse and really enjoyed them. I was so disappointed with this course I left very early. I felt the instructor was prejudice in whom she assisted in this course. I felt, I observed, that she was only interested in helping those whom seem to know what they were doing. I felt, ignored, by not knowing, the techniques. I was interested in this workshop because it was posted for all levels. It was a waste of my money and time. I did purchase for a friend who attended, she is experienced in art techniques, she stayed in the course, she did not say she enjoyed it but she did learn a lot.
This class was very overpriced! 10 minutes of instruction. 5 flowers which you arranged, had to disassemble and had to carry home in a piece of paper. I have never taken a flower class where you didn’t have a completed arrangement to take home. A rip off.
So fun! One of a kind experience. The teacher and TAs were attentive and helpful. You get to take the flowers home but you’ll need to buy everything else to recreate the flower arrangement.
Our instructor was very patient and kind - and a good artist as well! It's more challenging than it looks so I was glad to have a reference image to work with. I would absolutely recommend this class to other people. Very relaxing and also challenging.
