What you'll learn in this notary training:
This Secretary of State approved class will prepare you to take the exam again by reviewing all relevant Notary law . You will be ready to take the official notary exam and practice as a safe and effective notary.
Notaries with a current commission are eligible for a three-hour class. Renewing Notary must take the exam prior to their commission expiration date or they will need a six-hour seminar to qualify.
Renewing notaries are welcome to join us for all 3 sessions but will only receive a Proof of Completion reflecting the class in which they are registered!
Schedule your In-Person Notary Exam as soon as possible Exam seats fill quickly so schedule now. If the exam site you want is full, you can be a walk-in candidate but a seat is not guaranteed. Testing information is updated regularly, and larger counties offer multiple test dates and times each month.
Please bring the following items required to take the exam:
1. Secretary of State Notary Exam Application (provided in class.)
2. Proper ID, which may be one of the following:
a. State-issued Driver’s license or ID card
b. Canadian or Mexican Driver’s license
c. U.S. passport or a passport issued by a foreign government
d. U.S. military ID card
3. 2 x 2 color passport photo
4. Proof of Completion (Issued after class.)
a.Proofs are valid for two years for first time notaries.
b.Renewing notaries must take the exam before their commission expires, otherwise
they must take a six-hour seminar.
5. Check or money order for exam payable to the Secretary of State $40, retake fee $20.
This fee is in addition to the class fee.

Please Note:
You will be required to pass the State exam and to submit ‘Live Scan' fingerprints (details will be provided at the seminar). If you wish, you can register and take the State exam immediately after completing the seminar.
To take the exam, you must be at least 18 years old, have NO felonies on your record, and bring:
- A check made payable to the Secretary of State in the amount of $40
- Current driver’s license with photo, state-issued ID card, or other appropriate photo ID
- 2x2 passport color photo
- Two sharpened #2 pencils
- Mask
Additional $20 materials fee to be collected at the beginning of class.
Remote Learning
This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.
Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.
School Notes:
You MUST have and input a valid California address and US phone number when signing up for Santa Monica College courses, or you may be rejected from the course. If you do not have a valid US address and phone number, your enrollment will not be accepted.

Refund Policy
NO CANCELLATIONS AFTER A CLASS HAS BEGUN, so choose courses carefully!
- Requests for withdrawal from a class must be submitted in writing via email at least seven (7) business days before the start date of the class; receipt of requests made via other methods, such as phone messages, cannot be guaranteed.
- You may receive a credit voucher applicable to future Community Education classes, which is valid for two years from the date of issue.
- A minimum service charge of $10 per class cancellation will be withheld.
- Refunds are granted ONLY if a class is cancelled, discontinued, or rescheduled.
- In the instance of cancelled classes, course fee is automatically refunded.
- Credit card refunds are processed with seven business days, check and cash refunds will be issued by check within 45 business days.
Transfers:
- To transfer to another class, request must be submitted in writing via email at least seven (7) business days before the original class meets.
- A minimum service charge of $10 per class transfer will be deducted.
Important Information:
- Refunds are NOT issued for absences nor prorated for late registrations.
- Missed class meetings may not be made up in another class. There is no auditing of classes.
- Students are highly encouraged to register before class begins.
- Returned checks will be subject to a $25 handling charge.
Some high demand classes, such as Glass Fusing and Good Times Travel day trips, have separate and different refund policies stating that all registrations are final, and no refunds, credits, or transfers will be given. Please bear that in mind when registering for those classes.
