Class Delivery:
Higher education isn’t what it used to be—and neither is “traditional” classroom learning. In the 21st century, you can propel forward your learning goals and take advantage of technological advances that provide not only flexibility and customization, but a truly elevated learning experience.

At The New School’s Open Campus, our online offerings are designed to offer a personalized, faculty-led, collaborative experience that focuses on achieving students’ goals. We offer the convenience of studying on your own schedule through an online platform while having industry experts engaging and guiding student progress every step of the way.

Convenience and Flexibility

  • Like the rest of the university, each online course is uniquely and carefully created by faculty and offers a distinct and dedicated learning opportunity.

  • More than 200 online classes designed by experts and taught by The New School professors are available annually, which may be taken for degree credit or on a non-credit basis.

  • Online Learning students benefit from The New School’s global network, connecting them to a community of like-minded individuals across disciplines and backgrounds, enriching their experience and academic progression.

  • Our online courses follow our on-site classes—that are typically small in size to ensure personalized instruction and big on discussion. The seminar-style of teaching translates especially well to the Web, where every student can participate with ease.

  • Our online courses meet asynchronously—which means you can read materials, engage in discussions, watch videos, and participate in projects, blogs, wikis, and more any time of the day or night.

  • You will always have direct contact with your instructor and peers as you progress through discussions, projects, and open questions. Some courses even include synchronous class sessions online.
Teacher: Donna Berger

  • How to situate and understand fashion trends in a historical and cultural context.
  • How to explore connections between historical, popular culture and contemporary fashion.
  • What is Fashion News? Thoughts and observations from the fashion press.
  • What are American Fashion Narratives; the rise of the American Industry and the American Design & Trend Report.

School Notes:

How to Get Your Newcard:

The Newcard will provide students with a host of additional benefits. In order to claim your New School ID, please visit our office, located at 72 Fifth Avenue, lower level. You will have to present another valid form of photo ID, like a driver's license or passport. Your name must be spelled the same way on your driver's license (or other form of ID) as it is in the New School database; any discrepancy will result in delays in issuing a card.

You may not receive your ID card in time before class. You can print a copy of your registration from my.newschool.edu (Academics Tab -> View Class Schedule and Locations) and present it to security with a photo ID in lieu of the ID card.

Once you receive your ID card you should go to accounts.newschool.edu to obtain your NetID using your N# which is on the ID card. Once you have your NetID you can reset your password. Then using your Net ID + Password, you can log into my.newschool.edu to view your class location, course schedule, and New School announcements.

Alternatively you can call the Reg office (212.229.5620) and they will give the N# to you over the phone after you answer some identifying questions.

Course locations may change up into the first week of classes.Students are usually asked to check their room location the day of or night before their first class. Usually when there is a location change after the first day of class the instructor will send out an email notifying all students on the roster. This is less likely to happen though.

You can also check a location by going to Class Meeting Locations (on www.newschool.edu/registrar, under the Related Links section on the lower right side of the page). You will need to know your subject's subject code or select all subject codes to search.
