Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this blueprint reading training:

The word "blueprint" makes us think of white line drawings on a deep blue background showing beautiful old buildings, or ships, or historic city plans.

This introductory course visits the development of blueprints within the construction industry, and shows the student what to expect in a contemporary construction drawing set, and how to understand scale and symbols in drawings. There is hands-on experience with drawing simple scaled drawings. The later lessons in this course review the place of CADD and more advanced 3-D and intelligent building modeling as "blueprints" morph in the world of e-technology.

Classroom location listings are also posted outside the CAPS office and the lobby of the 17 Lexington Avenue building.

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refund Policy

Students MUST submit a detailed written request to withdraw from a course, which CourseHorse will then forward on to the school. The request must state the reason of cancellation.

Refunds or credits are available: Full refund or credit if request to withdraw is made 3 business days before the first class session. 50% refund or credit if request to withdraw is made before the second class session. After the second class session no refunds or credits will be granted.

No refunds or credits will be issued for classes that meet four sessions or fewer. Classes include seminars, intensives and workshops.

All refunds will have a $25 processing fee deducted from the course refund as well as a $20 registration fee ($45 total).

When Baruch College cancels a course, refunds are made automatically. If for any reason the department cancels a session, then a make-up session will be offered.

COURSE WITHDRAWALS

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must notify the CAPS Office in writing. Failure to complete a course, ceasing to attend class, notifying the instructor of your desire to withdraw, or general dissatisfaction with a course does not constitute a withdrawal and does not entitle you to a refund. Instructors are not permitted OR able to process withdrawals, transfers or refunds.

MAKE-UP POLICY

If a student misses a session, the department unfortunately does not authorize the student to make up that missed session in another section. If the instructor informs the student to visit another section of his class, then that is between the student and the instructor.

I feel that we didn’t focus on reading blueprints. The professor focused more on the history of blueprints. We got to see an actual (real) blueprint on session 6. Took these sessions twice a week and we would take an open book quiz once a week go over what we learned the previous session and talk about a couple of other things, such as abbreviations, symbols, BIM & CADD. I did learn how to use a scale and learned a couple of things about the history and what programs are being used as of today to build but that’s all. Professor was nice but I just wished we would’ve focused more on the main purpose.

Question from Lorena A.
I am interested in taking the Introduction to blueprint reading and construction documents class starting july 13th- 3 sessions class, however, I would be a TRUE beginner as this would be a totally new change of career paths for myself. With that said, are there any requirements, in terms of education level that one should have. Thank you in advance
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Lorena! If you are new to this field, the school suggests that you should take Basic Construction Project Management https://coursehorse.com/nyc/classes/professional/construction/construction-management/basic-construction-project-management as a foundation.

Question from kat
I am thinking of taking this class along with the project estimates and bidding class. Should I sign up for the bidding class first? I might need more time with the bidding class since one seems to be 8 sessions and the other only 3 sessions.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Kat! The Introduction to Blueprints and Construction Documents and Construction Project Cost Estimating & Bidding have the same schedule (June class) and it is advisable you take one class at a time so that you can get most out of the class. Hope his help!

Question from anonymous
Hi sir/mam I would like to know do you guys teach the. Blueprint of rebar carpenter
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! The school has two instructors that teach this class. Sarah Marsh: No we do not have a whole session on rebars, as such. I teach the fundamentals of blueprint reading that allow the student to read any kind of construction industry drawing.
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
I could include a short review of rebars in one of my sessions, that is a good idea as an add-on within the curriculum. Tell him he would get about 10 minutes within the course on this specific topic - doesn't sound much but believe me I can explain a lot in 10 minutes.
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Ariad Beazer: The drawings sets we cover typically consist of architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, sprinkler and fire alarm. In addition, I have allowed students to bring in any other sets of drawings they may want to review during class. Last session, one student brought in shoring drawings for a reinforced concrete building. I hope this answers your question.

Is this class a practical manual drafting class?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! No it is not a drafting class. This introductory course teaches students the basic concepts and terminology needed to interpret a set of Blueprints a.k.a. Construction drawings. It will examine the components that make up drawings and how individual sheets come together to create drawing sets.

Question from anonymous
Does this class teach you how to read plumbing blueprints
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hello, there! The class teaches students how to read all the drawings that go into a construction set. Most of the time is spent on architectural drawings; we have a specific part session on a commercial sprinkler/plumbing drawing. The intent of the course is to teach the general understanding of how to read all drawings, including structural, HVAC, electrical, sprinkler, plumbing as well as architectural. Hope this answers your question!
