Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this welding class:

The class is unique because it is "limited to 2 people". You will receive individual help. The class is taught by an artist who has experience teaching both sculptors and welding certification for Unions. She is a Part-Time Associate Professor at Parsons School of Design, teaching Metal Fabrication. This class is an empowering experience for both beginners as well as people who have experienced welding in the past. The Studio has a wall of open windows for excellent ventilation.

In this class you will set the machine, tack, and run a bead. While learning these skills, you will create a unique small sculpture to take home. We will discuss the many advantages of Mig welding when setting up your own shop, creating furniture, art, fabrication, etc.

What to wear:

  • Wear closed toe leather or suede shoes and cotton socks.
  • Do not wear clothes you care about. Cotton jeans are best.
  • Bring a long sleeved sweatshirt and wear a long sleeved cotton shirt.
  • Welding gear and gloves are supplied and included with session. There is no fee for metal.

Refund Policy

  • Due to limited class size there are no refunds.
  • If you cancel 16 business days prior to the class start date you can sign up for another time if available.
  • In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.

Michelle's class was a perfect balance of educational and fun for a first time welding experience. She is very knowledgeable and was open to answering any questions we had, as well as taking her time showing us the proper techniques. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone whose curious about welding! A great way to learn hands on in a safe environment.

One of the best courses I’ve taken! First off, Michelle is an incredible teacher and sculptor! I learned more about welding than I thought possible in just two hours. She’s very patient and knowledgeable and it was a lot of fun to get this kind of hands on experience with metalwork sculpture. Needless to say it was a great way to spend the weekend, and if you’re on the fence about signing up for this course DO IT!

My son and I had a great time. My son has experience welding, I am a total newbie. Michelle was an excellent teacher to us both. We learned a lot and we each made a very cool jewelry/key holder, both of which are already being put to good use! I can't recommend this class enough.

AMAZING class! Trust, I had absolutely no experience with welding. I work at a desk all day; this was a polar opposite of my day to day world. I was a bit nervous, but Michelle put us at ease quickly, explaining all the safety measures in place within the work area and equipment. There was so much intrigue with all the tools/equipment to see and touch, the time FLEW by! Her instructions were clear, her responses detailed and animated, she really kept our attention with ease. I learned even while watching her instruct the other student. The location itself was captivating, located at the historical Brooklyn Navy Yard with so much history and even some of Michelle's own functional art structures on display! I walked away with an extreme sense of accomplishment, and some new knowledge in this niche area. This was not just a class, but an EXPERIENCE.

I absolutely LOVED this experience and could not recommend it more! It’s rare to find someone who is not only a fantastic and experienced artist with years of craft mastery up their sleeve; but also an exemplary professor. Michelle Greene was EXTREMELY patient, attentive, thorough, candid and welcoming. Her class is structured enough to have a good pacing, but flexible enough so that the teaching can be adapted to every students’ speed. I would recommend this for absolute beginners as well as more experienced welders who want to practice and widen their skills. In the end I could only feel inspired to continue working with metal, I hope I can keep on learning with Michelle, I will for sure be booking more lessons with her!

Michelle's class was great! It was interesting to learn about the different kinds of welding processes, and Michelle has tons of real world experience both as an artist and in the welding industry. And of course getting to weld for the first time was amazing. The idea of welding was intimidating, but Michelle made it super approachable and safe, so it was a lot of fun. And my small metal sculpture lives on my wife's bedside table, which is a nice memento. Highly recommend the class!

Michelle is not only an artist who teaches at art schools but also someone with a long resume of industrial welding experience. That means she can tune your class to variety of needs. If you are here for a date/experience, I've no doubt that you'll have a great time. She has every tool imaginable in the shop but will make it easy for to enjoy the fun part, after making sure you know the safety rules before you begin. In my case, I was hoping to have a rigorous session similar to what you would get in welding schools since I needed the skill for an upcoming art project, and I was more than happy with what I took away from the class. She drove straight into details of each component of the machine (the parameter settings, variety of wire materials and what they're used for etc.), and once safety protocols were understood, we got straight into welding practice while she pointed out the dos and donts, and gave advises for making things work for different type of materials. There was already an improvement in the skill during the short time. I went home w/ enough knowledge to purchase a welding machine and use it safely, but also felt that I wanted to come back for several more sessions - you get that when you know that you are working with a great teacher/mentor. Can't recommend her enough !
