Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this glass blowing class:

This class will focus on interior and exterior folds: a technique in which, in the process of blowing, the glass is strategically folded on itself to produce a ring. This ring can be on the inside or the outside of the vessel. Folds can have practical or aesthetic value and can be incorporated into a design in a variety of ways. They can be used to produce a rim for a lid, or reinforce the lip of a vessel by doubling it over. Some historians refer to an interior fold as a “mercurial ring,” a feature in pre-electric designs for chandeliers and candelabras to extend the reach of a flame’s illumination in the glass. These techniques can be used for precise designs or experimental sculpture. On Friday night, the class will begin with demonstrations; then on Saturday and Sunday, students will practice the technique to incorporate into their own designs.

What to expect: Students will leave this course feeling confident about the procedures for producing folds in blown glass. We will try to keep the technical demonstrations to Friday and Saturday. We want to support students with time to practice with the guidance of the instructors.

Eligibility: Previous glassblowing experience required. You should have 1-2 years of experience, and feel comfortable gathering and moving through the steps of making a basic cup. Don’t feel ready yet? Check out our more introductory classes to build your skills. Open to ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight each week, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.
