Structural understanding is key in developing a drafting skillset that considers form and space. Taught by CFA Faculty, Evan Kitson, this six-week online course we'll study form, both its construction and depiction, through two extended "master-copy" drawings of sourced imagery that we pull from historic drawings and paintings.
We'll study the human figure as well as the portrait, and within their framework we'll navigate gestural staging, planar relationships, and form analysis. Extra focus on the foundational geometric forms and their use in building a rich depiction of the figure will be given. References will be provided. Pulling from art history, these studies will allow us to engage in materiality issues, in this case working in "red chalk" as well as the historic combination of "trois crayon". We'll also be taking a look at the contemporary variation of these color concepts that Kitson employs in his own work with red and blue pencils.
Material use is very open, and graphite and charcoal (black and white) would be fantastic alternative mediums to work with if red chalk and trois crayon are not available.
