Elizabeth N. Orleans was born in Philadelphia, PA. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. She has also studied at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Clayworks in Santa Fe, Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, the Oregon School of Art and Craft in Portland and the Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy.
In 2004 Orleans was chosen to create a site specific installation, involving thousands of ceramic elements, at the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Luther Burbank Center of the Arts in Santa Rosa, CA. TThe piece was featured in Ceramics Monthly magazine and was shown at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco, CA, Royal T in Culver City, CA and at the West Hollywood Library in Los Angeles, CA.
Moving to Venice Beach, CA, along side the tradition of Southern California ceramic artists Ken Price and Peter Voulkos, Elizabeth Orleans continues to pursue innovation in her chosen medium. Her collisions of geometric and organic forms, often referencing growth, the human body, and abstracted life forms, have drawn comparisons to the work of artists Yayoi Kusama and Louise Bourgeois. Elizabeth also furthers her interest in altering pre-existing spaces by creating architectural interventions that penetrate boundaries and explore movement, change, and the infinite possibility of time.
Elizabeth Orleans has been a chosen artist for the Venice Art Walk and Auction benefitting the Venice Family Clinic since 2009. She was the selected artist for the 3rd Annual Summer Project in 2011 at Royale Projects in Indian Wells, CA consisting of three ambitious installations. She created a wall installation at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and built a sculpture garden inside of the new space of Fresh Paint gallery in Culver City, CA in 2012. She has been a part of several group exhibitions including “Palette to Palate” at the Laguna Art Museum. Her all new body of work was shown at Sloan Projects Gallery at Bergamot Station in spring 2016. Elizabeth is devoted to conceiving challenging work and continue her practice in southern California.
The class is fun for all levels. It is great to learn directly from the artist.
“It’s been a very long time since I have been creative with ceramics (since art class in high school almost 20 years ago) and recently decided I needed a creative outlet to balance my crazy work life. I found Elizabeth’s “Ceramic Social” and couldn’t be happier with the class. She has a super cool studio in Venice and the class is a ton of fun with a super laid back vibe. Her instruction is great (and her personal art work is incredible) and she’ll teach you how to build whatever vision/ideas you have in your head. I’ve personally made some aggressively large pieces that I would not have been able to do without her instruction. I’d say the class is great for all levels: People who have no experience building clay, people who do, and everyone in between. For the inexperienced, she’s great at giving suggestions and instruction (by example) for first time pieces/projects. Bonus: I’ve met some really cool people there as well, that I would not have, hadn’t I taken her class
I wish there were more instructions or just any instructions quite frankly. I got there knowing absolutely nothing about working with clay and hoping to learn something new. But all I got was just a little chunk of clay and “do what you want” I mean it’s fun if you already know what you’re doing and how to do it (which seemed to be the case for most of the other people there) but if you’re looking to actually learn something then I’d choose another ceramics studio. Oh and also, it does not include 25lbs of clay. I got probably closer to 2 lbs if even that.
