What you'll learn in this food tours class:

Discover some of the southland’s finest chocolate candy makers and the basics of bean-to-bar chocolate making in a relaxed, daylong journey. All the while, you will be able to indulge your own chocolate obsessions and make gift purchases for family and friends. Led by choc-holic John Powers, you will begin your day at the long-standing Edelweiss Chocolate, a cornucopia of chocolate candies and other sweet delights and the inspiration for the memorable “I Love Lucy” candy episode. Next, explore chocolate-covered fudge at John Kelly Chocolates, which specializes in contrasting chocolate with gourmet salts. Afterwards, find out about the contemporary chocolate candy making at nearby andSons Chocolatiers. Here, the candies are like jewels. And don’t overlook the ceiling mural that tells tale of cacao! Next, there will be an exploration of the Swiss tradition at Teuscher Chocolates, a global brand that ensures consistency by regular air delivery from Europe. Here also you will be amazed at the décor and the hand-crafted gift boxes. Taking time out for lunch on your own at the comfortable La Scala Restaurant (and an espresso or a glass of red wine if you are so inclined), engage in conversation with your excursion companions to discover what has brought them to this unique journey. After lunch, the exploration will continue at Letterpress Chocolate, a bean-to-bar factory, where you will discover and taste the intricacies of fine cacao from around the globe’s chocolate belt. These chocolatiers who process their own cacao beans will take you into their factory and show you how every step of the chocolate-making process is done on site.  Itinerary subject to change:  The factory tours require attendees to wear closed-toe shoes; and not to wear perfume, colognes, or heavy-scented lotions/oils, or you may be refused admission

Excursion fee includes factory tour and tasting fees.

Depart:  El Camino College lot J (in front of the Marsee auditorium) @ 9:00AM, Return: 5:00PM.

IMPORTANT: For campus/in-person classes, vaccination proof and masking in classrooms is required for adult and kid students and staff.

Question from Sheri D.
Do you tour each of the businesses?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
The extensive behind-the-scene tour will be at Edelweiss Chocolate. This will be approximately 30 minutes and will include samples. The other locations do not include a tour (as the product is made elsewhere with the exception of Letterpress Chocolate, which will include samples). K Chocolatier, Beverly Hills Teuscher, and andSons Chocolatiers will not include samples (but will have an informed salesperson to talk about the product). The tour guide has decided to leave off See's Candy since it will take the time that is better spent in Beverly Hills.
