Ink and Gouache are ancient materials that have maintained their appeal because of an extraordinary versatility and convenience as tools for study, composition, and experimentation. In combination, these techniques are capable of all of the sophistication and physical diversity of oil, acrylic, and other techniques traditionally used for finished pictures.
In this workshop, students will move through a number of exercises that emphasize the expressive capability of these techniques. The goal is to make the the vista of possibility as clear and exciting as possible.
Students will bring in the image of a subject: a photograph, a painting, or an imaginative sketch. They will then draw and paint this subject in a few different ways, rotating through weaving, wash, and thicker layering techniques. By the end of the class, students should have a solid foundation for how to combine these tools for a wide range of applications.
Friends Miles Lewis & Miles Yoshida got to know each other long after incorporating these materials into their work. They have distinct similarities and strong differences that allow them to provide a specifically rich understanding of these tools. From Albrecht Durer to classical Japanese graphics, Edvard Munch, Andrew Wyeth, and story book illustration, their influences and awareness allow them to provide flexible instruction for wherever students would want to go.
The Workshop will include:
I. INTRODUCTION (~ 20 min.)
Both instructors will describe their background and insights on ink, gouache, and the history of these materials.
II. CONTOUR APPROACH (~ 40 min)
Students begin by capturing their subjects with ink contours. They will then proceed to wash and layer with color over the drawing they’ve made.
III. COLOR BLOCKING APPROACH (~ 40 min)
Students begin by blocking in their subjects using flat washes of gouache. They will then begin rendering the subject using ink and colored lines.
—- BREAK —- (~20 min.)
IV. TONAL BACKGROUND APPROACH (~ 40 min)
Students will draw their subject on a toned surface. They will then select out areas for particular color accents, highlights, and shadow shapes.
V. FINISHING THE FAVORITE (~ 60 min.)
Students will choose their favorite result from the three approaches and continue to finish that image using all the different techniques covered.
VI. DISCUSSION AND Q&A (20 min.)
The instructors will discuss the finished pieces and answer any questions.
