Introduction to Ikebana

Life is stressful and at times chaotic. Practicing Ikebana involves calming and focusing one’s mind. It is learning and developing a new approach to the beauty found in nature all around us. Students gain two sets of benefits; one, the skill/process of arranging flowers that is relaxing, and second, students will bring home a fresh flower arrangement after every class.

Course Objective: This course introduces students to the art form and discipline of Japanese Ikebana (flower arrangements.) The simplicity of lines, appreciation of nature, and the rich history of this tradition will be covered. 

The following are the three learning objectives:

• Know the history of Japanese Ikebana
• Demonstrate the basic skill of the introductory forms
• Understand the process of Ikebana as a way in appreciation of nature

Students will need to bring the following items to class:

• 1-10” flat container (vase)
• 2-3” x 4” kenzan (from Japan)
• 3-Garden cutter (from Japan)

These may be purchased from the instructor on the first day of class or you may bring your own. Once registered for the course, please email [email protected] if you would like the instructor to bring any of the above items for you.

PLEASE NOTE:

• Different project designs will be completed weekly.
• Class enrollment in prior classes is not required. All levels welcomed.
• Materials fee in the amount of $10 will be collected by the instructor at the time of the first class.
