The course was expertly addressed. The teacher took time but not too long to make sure everyone in the class was up to speed. The students varied in excel skill level but with an Intermediate class nothing took too long for everyone to fully grasp. I think the teacher thoroughly went through exercises and practice problems. Sometimes even called on students to complete exercises in front of the classroom. Everyone was called on about once and if you really do not know you do not need to go up. It's more of a way of making you feel proud of figuring it out. I will definitely be back for a higher level course! Thanks again!

I loved the class a lot because of the fact that it was a week and able to compress all that information into it. I also liked the 10AM start, not too early. The 5pm end was a little late for my particular week that week, since I had things to do for about 3 days of the week and had to leave early. However, any week-long class will present that problem with trying to fit errands before or after the class. The teacher was very fast and he could type as fast as he could talk. I tried to keep up and coded along with him as he presented, which really helped with the hands on and understanding being able to actually see it run in front of me. This type of hands on also keeps me engaged versus just sitting there watching someone lecture. Sometimes I couldn't quite keep up, but all is good, I still got the main points and lots of information in a short time. The exercises were also good practice, but with me, it takes time and experience to be able to rattle off code with intuitive understanding, so I'm not worried about that yet, since with practice, I know it becomes second nature. Overall, I like the way Practical Programming teaches, and I'm thinking of taking more classes from there.

Houston Industries That Use Data Analytics

Houston’s central location provides it with access to global markets. There are more than 6,400 manufacturers in the greater Houston area that distribute over $80 billion in annual products. The city has four deep-water seaports and two international airports, which makes it a prime location to distribute products across the US, as well as to an international market.

Houston is home to a range of growing industries that provide the city with a dynamic job market, such as agriculture, aerospace, and transportation. The following sections will examine how data analytics is used in these industries.

Agriculture

Texas has approximately a quarter-million ranches and farms, as well as 126 million acres of farmland, which is greater than any other state. The agriculture industry not only plays a significant role in the state as a whole but in Houston. Approximately one-quarter of Houston’s land is used for agricultural purposes. Those in Houston who have data analytics skills can apply them to collect agronomic data. These data study agricultural issues like spacing, moisture levels at harvest, planting, fertilizing, and grain temperature. Data Analysts use these data to predict various scenarios and results to help ensure crops are healthy, plentiful, and distributed properly.

Aerospace

Houston has over 500 companies specializing in space vehicle or aircraft manufacturing, research, and support. Many of the country’s largest aerospace manufacturing companies operate in Houston, such as Lockheed Martin Space Company and SpaceX. Data plays a huge role in aerospace. This industry continues to expand its data use to better understand its current technologies, as well as to develop new ones. Data analytics helps suppliers connect with original equipment manufacturers, which can improve the supply chain process and ensure efficient product delivery. Additionally, both defense systems and aerospace acquire, transform, and interpret large datasets and use this real-time information to make rapid decisions. Big data provides the aerospace industry with a tool that benefits various sectors, such as operations, engineering, and administration.

Transportation

Houston is a busy, heavily populated city that relies on a range of transportation options to help people get to where they need to go as efficiently and quickly as possible. The city has major highways, a MetroRail system, a Metro Bus system, a public transit system, and two international airports. On an average day, over 650 departures occur at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport alone. The field of transportation data analytics makes it faster, easier, safer, and cheaper to gather and interpret vital transportation information. Transportation-related data also helps those who work in Houston’s transportation industry to decide which projects to prioritize and how many resources to invest in them. It also can quickly and accurately measure the impact of transportation initiatives, thereby allowing for timely adjustments. Transportation data can also spur public engagement, which gives residents and public officials an opportunity to stand behind initiatives to improve transportation.
