Description
Using a variety of educational approaches, including interactive lectures, experiential, lab-based and clinical/field-based learning techniques, the Center for MEDICS provides paramedic students with unique opportunities to develop the clinical sophistication they will need in their EMS careers.
Program Goals
To develop a pool of clinically sophisticated and competant paramedics to raise the bar at their respective services. To ensure competency in congnitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains.
Modified (Interactive) Lecture
Center for MEDICS believes that all learners should be actively engaged, even during presentations led by an instructor. Employing a heavy element of Socratic dialogue, instructors act as the “gatekeeper of information” during their lectures, managing the overall learning activities and allowing for interaction between students.
Experiential Learning
Instructors help students build their knowledge by analyzing cases based on real-world patient encounters. Students strive to resolve patient care issues that have no single right answer. Discussions offer an opportunity to apply theory to reality, and allow students to see how their decisions will impact patient outcomes, both positively and negatively.
Lab-based Learning
Practical skills sessions can be among the richest experiences students have at paramedic school. It is one of the few opportunities students will have to practice paramedicine much in the same way that professional paramedics do. In order for practical lab sessions to be effective, students need to understand not only how to do the skill/procedure, but why the skill is worth doing and what purpose it serves for improving patient care. With a heavy emphasis on high-fidelity human patient simulation and retrospective case debriefing, our paramedic students attain clinical and procedural familiarization before going into a clinical rotation and treating live patients.

Clinical/Field-based learning extends the walls of the classroom to a real-world setting. Students learn though direct interaction with an environment that reflects the concepts and situations covered in the classroom. This is a valuable tool that serves as a capstone learning experience.
